Literacy Nipissing has been serving adults in the Nipissing area since 1978. We are a not-for-profit, registered charitable organization that is run by a volunteer board of directors. We are funded through the Literacy and Basic Skills branch of the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development. We have an Executive Director to manage the day-to-day operations, a Program Coordinator to assist learners and tutors, and teachers who deliver programming. We also depend on the generosity of our community who volunteer as tutors. Since 1978, we have served well over 5000 learners and have been assisted by over 2000 volunteer tutors. We are thankful for every volunteer, and we are proud of every learner who courageously walks through our doors looking for help and hope.

Literacy Nipissing is an Ontario Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) program that helps adults in Ontario to develop and apply communication, numeracy, interpersonal and digital skills to achieve their goals. The LBS program serves learners who have goals to successfully transition to employment, postsecondary, apprenticeship, secondary school, and increased independence. The program includes learners who may have a range of barriers to learning.

Strengthening our community...one learner at a time

What is literacy?

Literacy is about the ability to think, to communicate, to problem solve, to continually learn and the use technology.

The International Adult Literacy Survey (IALS) defines literacy as
“the ability to understand and employ printed information in daily activities at home, at work, and in the community – to achieve one’s goals and to develop one’s knowledge and potential."

Our Mission

Literacy Nipissing provides opportunities for adults in the Nipissing district to improve English literacy and numeracy skills.

Our Values

Literacy Nipissing regards its learners, volunteers, members and staff with respect and honesty in a supportive environment. Literacy Nipissing provides quality literacy services and programs. Literacy Nipissing will be a leader in the provision of literacy services by creating awareness, offering training and reflecting best practice in the field.

The Laubach Method

No teaching experience is required to tutor at Literacy Nipissing. Tutors work with students on a one-to-one basis. This philosophy serves as one of the cornerstones of our approach to working with adult learners. We have depended on the message of Dr. Frank Laubach, a pioneer in the development of adult literacy: “Each one teach one”.We are very thankful for the tutors who have over the years, taken the time to teach others.
